We went on a ride to put flowers on grandma's grave. I was going to drive but it was a beautiful day so I asked Mark to take me on the bike. It was a nice ride, chilly coming home but very nice. Anytime I smell Lilacs it reminds me of my grandma. There a lot of things that I remember about her; she had the most fantastic dresses to dress up in, she was always worried our feet were cold and had tons of booties to wear. There was always ice cream in the freezer downstairs, not the brick thing we all buy now but the big bucket. We always had a salad with dinner with 1000 Island dressing and she liked buttermilk, I'm sure I wasn't the only grand kid she tried to slip it too when we weren't looking. If I spent Saturday night there we would get up to go to church and then walk down the McDonalds after, she always carried candies in her purse to give kids if church got boring. I remember she was a reading aid at the elementary school and all the kids called her Grandma Payne. I thought she knew everybody and if she didn't every one surely knew her. Even when she got older and told stories, like how she climbed up the telephone pole to hang the lines, or when she got confused and as dad was mowing the lawn standing on her porch telling him his mom wanted him to go home. It's always with a smile I think of these things. Anyway, got a little side tracked here. She had a huge Lilac bush (more like a tree) in the back/side yard; we could run between the bush and the corner of the house. I’m pretty sure roses were her favorite, the whole yard along one side had what seemed like hundreds of them. But it's always the scent of a spring lilac that makes me think of her.
